Clermont was originally established on low lying ground next to a billabong but flooding was always a problem, with four substantial floods occurring between 1864 and 1896. The most severe flood, in 1916, killed 65 townspeople and remains one of Australia's worst natural disasters in terms of lives lost. Following the 1916 flood Clermont was relocated to higher ground.

The Clermont Golf Course is located on East Street of Clermont. It is carefully maintained and interesting to play. For example, at Hole 7 you tee off from a raised area and need to clear a gully. The greens on Clermont Golf Course play true. "Make sure you play the course if you visit Clermont." 9 holes, Par 71, 5659 metres. Grass Greens.

Clermont has an active Junior Golf Club.
